| Members at a recent meeting |
The Classical Music group was formed nearly three years ago by Gwen and Ray Sands. We now a steady turnout of up to 20 members, meeting on the fourth Wednesday of every month at the Blessed Robert Grissold Church meeting room. Meetings last from 2pm – 4pm with a tea / coffee break in the middle. They generally consist of a programme of recorded music, but in the past, we were lucky enough to have a live performance by Allsorts Clarinet Ensemble - perhaps with the help of U3A members we might have another live event in 2026?
The programme in 2025 ranged from themes such as ‘From Baroque to Rock’, through individuals each contributing a track to a given theme, to ‘Sopranos’ and ‘Desert Island Discs’. The choice is with the contributing members and is both varied and enjoyable.
There is plenty of space available for new members!
Reports of Past Meetings

At our recent meeting Alan Buckland took us on a fascinating journey of tunes and songs from Baroque to Rock. He explained how so many of our modern songs are based on tunes written originally by classical composers from Bach to Pachabel to Chales Dawes. For example, Bach’s ‘Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring’ has been used often including by The Beach Boys in the song Lady Lynda.. It was a journey with a lot of background information about the original composers and the modern composer/song writers. The programme was well received and attracted some potentially new members, so we hope they stay and join us again as our monthly programmes are a mixture of varieties from serious to light hearted or both.
