Prospective u3a Members
It was decided at the Balsall Common u3a committee meeting held on Friday 11th March 2018 that prospective members could attend up to 2 core meetings or two group activities before they must become full members. However these prospective members will not be covered by the u3a insurance and MUST be informed of the fact. It is up to the co-ordinators to monitor the number of times a prospective member attends their group.
FROM THIRD AGE TRUST — Disabled Members
Although the terms of the Disability Discrimination Act do not apply to self-help voluntary organizations which neither employ staff nor own buildings, Balsall Common u3a is prepared to take all REASONABLE steps to be as accommodating as possible to people with disabilities.
However, it is incumbent on any u3a member attending a group or activity to be able to conduct themselves without undue reliance on another member. Our liability insurance policy will cover neither a member injured trying to assist another nor the member being assisted.
Should you have a member who needs help then it is permissible for an outside carer to come along to facilitate that member’s participation. In this situation the responsibility for the member’s welfare would rest with the carer and not Balsall Common u3a. Any group Co-ordinator organizing outdoor activities or trips should ensure that sufficient information is provided so that members can make an informed choice as to whether they can safely participate.
Group Co-ordinators organizing activities held in a members home should inform the home-owner to ascertain whether they had the facilities to safely accommodate a disabled member’s participation so an informed choice can be made by both parties
