Balsall Common

Ramblers

Status:Active, open to new members
Coordinator:
When: Mornings 10:00 am
First Tuesday and 3rd Wednesday of Each Month
Cost: One off payment of £2.00 when joining the Ramblers or Shorter Walks Group

This is a very active, popular and sociable group who enjoy each other’s company while tramping the local fields, highways and byways, marvelling at the wonderful Warwickshire scenery so close to us.

We meet twice a month, on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Wednesday at 10.00 am. Details of the next walk are given below.

We have a number of walk leaders, from the membership, who take it in turn to select a walk of about 5 to 6 miles. They choose where to go and where we meet. Newer members are encouraged to offer to lead a walk either singly, as a couple or a small group, after they have settled in with us but there is no compunction to do so!

We try to start within 10 miles of Balsall Common and most frequently find pub car parks very suitable for our starting/finishing points! Many members stay for a drink and/or a meal after the walk.

The membership of the group is about 80 of whom most are active.
A walk averages around 10-20 members with a high of 36! Walks take place in most kinds of weather with one major exception being snow!

This is a rambling group and for safety and insurance reasons dogs are not allowed.

The cost is very low — there is a joining fee of £2 and to date no other costs. However, members are asked to pay for their own drinks/meals after a walk!
With the joining fee money raised so far we have bought and kept up to date three first aid kits for the leaders to take on their walks and future funds will be available to buy maps, written up walks, etc.

If you would like to join or require any other information please contact the Coordinator Martin Richards Prospective new members can also "try us out" by just turning up at a walk starting point and joining us for that particular walk. Please note, however, if you are not already a u3a member you will not be covered by the u3a insurance scheme. Following that if you wish to continue you will need to join the u3a and the Ramblers group.

As all members are encouraged to lead walks, please contact the coordinator to discuss details further. Lots of help is at hand for anyone who has never led a walk before.

First May walk 2026

When:Tuesday 5 May 2026
Where:Lowsonford - All Saints Church, Preston Bagot
Meet:10:00 am The Fleur de Lys Pub, Lapworth Street, Lowsonford, Henley in Arden B95 5HJ
Directions:(8.8 miles/17 minutes) Head south on the Kenilworth Road/A452 towards Kenilworth. Turn right on to A4177 towards Warwick. At Five Ways Island take the second exit on to Five Ways Road and continue for 1.8 miles to Old Warwick Road (B4439). Turn left and immediately right to Shrewley Common. Immediately after crossing above the M40, turn right into Back Lane. Follow the lane around to the right passing lanes on the left into Lowsonford Village – continue through and the Fleur de Lys is on the right (pass the pub to access the main car park).
Walk:(4.5 miles) A pleasant walk, through fields, lanes (all very quiet but we will need to be alert) and woodland. We will aim to stop briefly at All Saints Church at Preston Bagot (the windows of which have links to William Morris) before returning to Lowsonford along the towpath of the Stratford on Avon Canal.
There are no challenging climbs and the few stiles involved are manageable. It was not too muddy when we recce’d the route, but conditions could change nearer the walk (especially close to where we cross a ford via a footbridge) in which case a pole could be an option.
If you can join us, please let me know by Saturday 2 May, even if you are unable to stay for lunch.
Afterwards:At the Fleur de Lys Pub, I have provisionally booked for 10. I will need to give them the number and pre-orders for lunch by 6.00 p.m. on Saturday 2 May. Could those staying for lunch please therefore let me know and send me your preorders before then.
